Dental Implants

Dental implants have brought about a revolution in the world of dental treatment and cosmetic dentistry. Nonetheless people still are ignorant of this revolution and harbor misconceptions about it. Read this article to clear your doubts about dental implant and follow the treatment to gain your long lost smile back.

Dental implants are basically an artificial metallic root for a prosthetic tooth. Your dentist puts the dental implant in the bone of your jaw. It is then left to heal and gain strength to hold on to the prosthetic tooth that is placed then. The implant is made up of titanium, which is known to be readily accepted by the body. Moreover the dentist takes much care so that the body does not refuse to accept it.

For the implant the dentist has to cut the gum tissue. After the procedure of implanting is completed he will stitch the gum either around the implant or over the implant and then leave it to heal. It takes quite some time to heal, though the process of placing the dental implant is rather painless.

Though dental implant can be conducted on everybody, but it is less likely to work well in patients suffering from uncontrolled diabetics or patients who have severe mental disorder. Though dental implant can be done under local anesthesia, patients with complications must discuss it with their doctor before taking any decision. Also patients who have large amount of bone missing have less chances to get good results from dental implant. However they can go for bone grafting and then dental implant.

This surgery can be done by Oral Surgeons, Peridontists, Prosthodontists or General Practitioners. The tooth is restored generally by Prosthodontists or General Practitioners of dentistry. It is better to talk to a general dentistry practitioner and know how much he knows about such implantation practice.

Dental implant is a costly process which may cost you anything in between $1500 to $2000 and sometimes even more. Therefore it is better to speak to your selected dentist and have a written document of all the costs involved. Make sure that there is no hidden expenditure which may bother you afterwards.

For the dentist you select be sure that he has enough experience. It is better that you find a qualified ADA specialists, better still a Board Certified Prosthodontist. Feel free to ask his previous cases and about his success rates. Call the patients he has treated and ask them about him. You should also judge his dedication, whether he is well known in this field or if he is teaching and publishes paper in this field still. Dental implant is a process that needs a person who has specialized in this field.

Dental implant is held to be a permanent solution for tooth loss due to accident or any other reason. But sometimes the dental implant does not integrate well and then fails to hold on to the tooth. In such cases you need to implant again. Also the dental implant needs maintenance and regular check up. So it is better that you take proper care and consult proper dentist.

With a little information and knowledge you can actually have teeth which will feel like real teeth! So what are you waiting for now? Go and get your smile back.
