Does the thought of visiting a dentist or a DDS scare you? Then rest assured that you are not alone in this problem and there are many like you who suffer. Dental phobia is not an uncommon phrase these days. There are millions of people who are afraid of the dentists. Consequently, they avoid the dentists like hell. However, the result of this phobia can be very critical, since negligence gives birth to further dental complication. The best way therefore, is to visit the dentists who practice sedation dentistry as they can cure both your disease and your phobia.

As far as the dental phobia is concerned there are hundreds of different reasons that can lead to this. However, in most of the cases, the patients encounter traumatic experiences at some stage of their dental history and that eventual leads to the phobia. It is here that the role of the DDS or dentists becomes so important. The sedation and sleep dentistry can be very useful in dismissing the fear about the dental treatment. Though the terms are often confused, they are two distinct methods of treatment.

In the sedation dentistry, you are conscious and yet in a state of drowsy. On the other hand, when you are taking the sleep dentistry, you are in sleep and have no clue about what is going on your teeth. An expert DDS can try both kinds of dentistry with you.  There are different ways through which the sedatives are applied. Generally, your dentists will discuss with you about the options that is most comfortable for you. So, it will be useful to have a basic understanding about the options available for you.

One common way to administer sedative is through mouth. Normally, the effect of the medicine stay for around 6 hours and therefore, you should be accompanied by another one to the clinic and on your way back home. Another way of administering is inhalation. Normally, this is done through a mask and laughing gas is the usual element used here.

The sedative can be injected intravenously as well. It is safe and more effective, though not very popular. However, the intra muscular injections are ideal for pediatric treatments. In both the cases, local anesthetics are used to nullify the pain. Generally, the sedatives make you calm and relaxed. Because of this, your dentist can perform more than one procedures at one go.

The sleep dentistry is basically performed through the general anesthesia. This is not a common way of treatment. Because of the complexities, trained professionals are needed to monitor the entire scene. In fact, the dentist must complete a 2 years training and have a certificate from the dental board to work with the method with precision.

There are four levels of sedation that is generally applied on a patient. The anxiolysis is the highest among them, while the general anesthesia, you are completely unconscious. Conscious sedation is a moderate stage and the deep sedation is step further. Sedation dentistry is ideal for those who have a fear for the dental treatments. Apart from that, there are some other concerns that lead to the sedation. Thus the children and patients who can’t control their movements are often subjected to sedative dentistry.
